Ciao a tutti, oggi Cubo è beato tra le donne, infatti Paolo non c’è e in compenso abbiamo la nostra Michela che torna dopo diverse settimane con una grossa novità…

1969 – L’uomo sbarca sulla Luna (51 anni fa): «Ha toccato». L’entusiastico annuncio del conduttore televisivo Tito Stagno comunica ai telespettatori che l’Apollo 11 ha toccato il suono lunare alle 22,17, ora italiana. Sullo schermo passano le immagini dell’astronauta Neil Armstrong che tocca la superficie lunare e inizia una storica passeggiata seguita alla TV da 600 milioni di persone in tutto il mondo, con una frase entrata nella memoria di tutti: «Questo è un piccolo passo per un uomo, ma un balzo da gigante per l’umanità.»

Abbiamo una bel modo di dire che è: “Sbarcare il lunario” è un’espressione utilizzata molto frequentemente con il significato di riuscire a guadagnare abbastanza per vivere in modo decoroso. Il lunario è un almanacco popolare che riporta i giorni ed i mesi dell’anno, i santi, le fasi lunari, le previsioni meteorologiche, ecc. Però lunario può significare in senso esteso anche anno, quindi sbarcare il lunario vuol dire riuscire ad arrivare con risorse sufficienti alla fine dell’anno.

Nel linguaggio marinaresco, sbarcare il lunario significava “arrivare in porto alla fine dell’anno”.

Come ci ricorda Michela, quest’espressione ha lo stesso significato di Tirare avanti la baracca che abbiamo presentato in un precedente episodio. La frase viene usata spesso anche scherzosamente o ironicamente:

“Da quando è stato promosso primario, sbarca il lunario alla grande!”.

1937 Muore Guglielmo Marconi: Tra i più grandi inventori di tutti i tempi, è considerato il padre della radio e in generale il principale artefice della comunicazione a grandi distanze.

Nato a Bologna da famiglia nobile, il marchese Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi studiò da autodidatta, nel 1899 vinse la sfida di trasmettere a grandi distanze con la prima comunicazione radiotelegrafica internazionale (attraverso la Manica), e una seconda nel 1901, mettendo in collegamento le due sponde dell’Atlantico (da Poldhu, in Cornovaglia, alla stazione di Saint John, sull’isola di Terranova).

Fu una svolta per le comunicazioni delle navi, e più tardi degli aerei, che da quel momento divennero più sicure grazie alla figura del “marconista” (dal nome appunto dell’inventore italiano) o “radiotelegrafista”. Meriti che nel 1909 valsero a Marconi il Nobel per la fisica.

Come ci ricorda Michela, molti nostri istituti scolastici, soprattutto tecnici, sono intitolati proprio a Guglielmo Marconi.

1973 – Muore Bruce Lee: Un mito senza tempo delle arti marziali che, oltre a inaugurare un nuovo genere cinematografico, mostrò agli USA e al resto del mondo la bellezza della cultura cinese.

Sfondò sul grande schermo grazie a Il furore della Cina colpisce ancora del 1971, toccando l’apice della popolarità con Dalla Cina con furore e L’urlo di Chen terrorizza anche l’occidente girato in Italia con la scena finale a Roma nel Colosseo.

A farlo entrare nella leggenda con il soprannome di The Dragon fu il film I tre dell’Operazione Drago, che uscì al cinema il 26 luglio del 1973, appena sei giorni dopo l’improvvisa e poco chiara scomparsa dello stesso Lee.

1956 -La Tragedia del transatlantico Andrea Doria: Partito con 1.134 passeggeri, dal porto di Genova e diretto a New York, il transatlantico italiano Andrea Doria si trova ad affrontare un fitto banco di nebbia. A poca distanza, in direzione opposta, viaggia la MN Stockholm, un rompighiaccio svedese diretto a Goteborg. Nonostante l’avvistamento sul radar e le comunicazioni tra i due equipaggi, alle 23,20 avviene un tremendo impatto con la nave svedese che sperona la Doria, provocando uno squarcio lungo quasi tutta la fiancata della nave. Alla fine si conteranno 46 vittime italiane e 5 uomini della Stockholm.

Michela ricorda che quando era piccola, suo nonno le diceva “Non fare l’Andrea Doria” ogni volta che lei cambiava improvvisamente idea.

Sapete che cosa significa “Fare l’Andrea Doria”?

Il transatlantico è intitolato ad Andrea Doria, un grande ammiraglio e uomo politico della Repubblica di Genova che nel 1512 tradì la sua città consegnando il porto nelle mani dei francesi, popolo nemico dei genovesi contro il quale avevano combattuto nella battaglia di Ravenna.

Da qui si usa l’espressione “non fare l’Andrea Doria”, per dire di non cambiare opinione o posizione di punto in bianco.

Simile a “Non essere una banderuola!”(essere una persona volubile o influenzabile, che cambia idea, così come una banderuola cambia direzione secondo il vento).

Hello everyone, today Cubo is blessed among women, in fact Paolo is not there and on the other hand we have our Michela who returns after several weeks with big news…

1969 – Man lands on the moon (51 years ago): “Ha toccato” (“It has touched down”). The enthusiastic announcement by the television host Tito Stagno communicates to viewers that Apollo 11 touched the lunar sound at 22.17, Italian time. On the screen passes the images of the astronaut Neil Armstrong who touches the lunar surface and begins a historic walk followed on TV by 600 million people around the world, with a phrase entered in everyone’s memory: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

We have a nice way of saying that it is: “Sbarcare il lunario” (“Making ends meet”) is an expression used very frequently with the meaning of being able to earn enough to live in a decent way. The lunar is a popular almanac that reports the days and months of the year, the saints, the moon phases, the weather forecasts, etc. But lunario can also mean year in a broad sense, therefore making ends meet means being able to arrive with sufficient resources at the end of the year. In seafaring language, making ends meet meant “arriving in port at the end of the year”.

As Michela reminds us, this expression has the same meaning of Tirare avanti la baracca (Bringing forward the shack) that we presented in a previous episode. The phrase is often used also jokingly or ironically:

“Since he was promoted to primary, sbarca il lunario alla grande! (he makes ends meet great!”).

1937 Guglielmo Marconi dies: Among the greatest inventors of all time, he is considered the father of radio and in general the main architect of communication over long distances.

Born in Bologna to a noble family, the Marquis Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi studied as a self-taught, in 1899 he won the challenge of transmitting at great distances with the first international radiotelegraphic communication (across the Channel), and a second in 1901, connecting the two shores of the Atlantic (from Poldhu, Cornwall, to Saint John station, on the island of Newfoundland).

It was a turning point for the communications of ships, and later of planes, which from that moment on became safer thanks to the figure of the “marconist” (from the name of the Italian inventor) or “radiotelegraphist”. Merits that in 1909 earned Marconi the Nobel Prize in physics.

As Michela reminds us, many of our schools, especially technicians, are named after Guglielmo Marconi.

1973 – Bruce Lee dies: A timeless martial arts myth that, in addition to inaugurating a new film genre, showed the USA and the rest of the world the beauty of Chinese culture.

He broke through to the big screen thanks to The Big Boss in 1971, reaching the peak of popularity with Fist of Fury and The Way of the Dragon shot in Italy with the final scene in Rome in the Colosseum.

To make him enter the legend with the nickname of The Dragon was the film Enter the Dragon, which was released in the cinema on July 26, 1973, just six days after the sudden and unclear disappearance of Lee himself.

1956 –The tragedy of the transatlantic Andrea Doria: Having left with 1,134 passengers, from the port of Genoa and bound for New York, the Italian transatlantic Andrea Doria was facing a thick fog bank. A short distance away, in the opposite direction, was traveling the MN Stockholm, a Swedish icebreaker bound for Gothenburg. Despite the sighting on the radar and the communications between the two crews, at 11.20 pm there is a tremendous impact with the Swedish ship ramming the Doria, causing a gash along almost the entire side of the ship. In the end there will be 46 Italian casualties and 5 Stockholm men.

Michela remembers that when she was a child, her grandfather used to say “Don’t do an Andrea Doria” every time she suddenly changed her mind.

Do you know what “Non fare l’Andrea Doria” (“Don’t do an Andrea Doria”) means?

The transatlantic liner is named after Andrea Doria, a great admiral and politician of the Republic of Genoa who in 1512 betrayed his city by delivering the port into the hands of the French, enemy people of the Genoese against whom they had fought in the battle of Ravenna.

From here we use the expression “do not do an Andrea Doria”, to say not to change your opinion or position out of the blue.

Similar to “Non essere una banderuola!” (“Don’t be a weather vane!” – Being a fickle or influenceable person, who changes his mind, just like a weather vane changes direction according to the wind).
